Hi Sephira, thanks a lot for cnnemotimg!Being an amateur or a professional doesn’t have anything to do with one’s eventual (posthumous) recognition. Rather, it has to do with whether one’s able and willing to live off their art’  which most of the time means selling lots of art pieces (and requires being able to grasp at the lower rules to make their pieces work’ and sell them).Artists who only end up racking up money after their death usually either didn’t have an audience (selling art pieces that aren’t relevant now is pretty hard, because few people buy pieces that don’t resonate with them) or worked as amateurs.  Professional’ can’t fit them in this context. But don’t get me wrong, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with being an amateur. Some of the best creative writing authors I’ve ever read write for free, and the same goes for visual artists! There’s a recurring belief that, on any subject, only professionals know what the subject really is about. Art is one of the many subjects which can prove this belief wrong (and informatics is another). Another problem when distinguishing an amateur from a professional is motivation. Some amateurs are a thousand times more relevant than most professionals, would rack up tens of thousands if they put their mind to it, but simply don’t want to live off their art’, out of modesty, or simply because they never thought about it.becky recently posted
