Triptych Wall Art

Triptych is a work of art that is divided into three sections or panels. In other words, it is 3 piece wall art, meant to be displayed together. In their oldest and most traditional form during the medieval period, triptych art was formed by the Ancient Romans who hinged two panels which flanked the central one. The triptych was a popular standard format for altar paintings in churches and cathedrals.

Franklin Arts gives triptych wall art a modern spin by placing 3 images together using abstract art, natural art, and surreal art. The images split apart gives the 3 piece wall art a new sense of design and style and cuts the image into thirds so that new details within each can be revealed. Three piece wall art has become a Franklin Arts staple and continues to be a favorite among clients.

Most of my art is canvas triptych art, however, I also do some framed triptych art, otherwise known as panaromic art or multiple picture art. The difference is that the frame does the job of splitting up the images and provides a new element of design and sense of style. Triptych frames are smaller and fit better for tighter spaces. I showed these three panel picture frames at my second art show years ago and had a lot of interest, so I continue to do them today and look forward to posting more to my wall art décor store as time passes.

Below are just a few examples of triptych artwork completed to date. Triptych art can come as frames or canvas. Any artwork can be designed to become a triptych, (three panel), piece.

I generally have two methodologies of triptych art. The first is to break up a single image and make it span across the three panels. This is probably the most common way. The second approach to creating triptychs is to reproduce the original image in a different way such as changing the color or orientation (flipped vertically, horizontally, etc) of the initial image. Either way, it’s a lot of fun and feel free to suggest ideas.

Triptych art, otherwise known as 3 panel art, can make a statement in any space. By hanging 3 piece wall art, it adds another level of design with a bit more dramatic effect.

To create my triptych art, there’s normally two approaches I take. The first is to create one art image, but then split them up into sections so the artwork flows from one panel to the next. This can be done with either abstract art or natural photography. The other approach is to create an image and then alter the color or some other element two more times and then display the 3 panels together to create a natural series. A triptych effect is only limited by imagination, and I must say it is one of my favorite types of artwork to create.
